Let’s try again: Build-up, then Punchline
Scott Kurt is, by all means, a professional webcomic maker. He talks seriously about webcomics and he’s like the Richard Dawkins of webcomics — i.e., a vocal figure that’s prone to some weird moments every once in a while.
And all that professionalism pulses in my head when I see something like, say, this last comic here. Because I look at it and can’t help thinking that this guy is doing this for a living.
It’s the last panel. It’s how it tries to set up a sitcom exchange but forgets to make it, you know, an exchange. It’s how it makes no sense and adds no humor to ask “X or Y?” and then say “actually, both” right afterwards. Not after a pause or a response, right after.
Because no matter how cheap it would be to have Cole and Brent do a humorous back-and-forth exchange that’s been seen a million times, it would be better than this… I don’t even know what this is.
