Tim reads webcomics (October 7, 2010)
Welcome to “Tim reads webcomics”, a semi-regular feature where I showcase what’s going on in various webcomics around the web. The fact that I link a webcomic doesn’t mean I think it’s good, unless I explicitly say so. Mostly it will be just irreverent commentary that has nothing to do with what the artists intended to say. I appreciate any feedback, because as you may notice I’m kinda new here! What comics do you think would make a good fodder for this digest?
Girl Genius (04/10/2010)
Steampunk + Tentacle Porn? If that sounds like your thing, the latest happenings in Girl Genius feature exactly that. Well, maybe minus the “porn” part. Although undoubtedly many will enjoy seeing Agatha entangled by green vines of doom while giggling like a schoolgirl.
SMBC (07/10/2010)
Holy shit, this guy has a really long neck. Could that be a side effect of the cure? I guess the story of Thalidomide didn’t teach us anything.
Minimum Security (06/10/2010)
In one of the most insane comics ever, protagonists blow up the construction site of a nuclear power plant because it “pollutes the environment” or something. However the evil capitalist ecocidal environment polluters are unfazed by this righteous attack! What will happen next? Fact: the author wants 99% of the world’s population to die off and the remaining people must survive by sustenance. Another fact: author can’t draw to save her life. Case in point: Kranti’s hand in panel 3.
Unwinder’s Tall Comics (07/10/2010)
Unwinder’s Tall Comics is a comic that is consistently awesome, but unfortunately doesn’t have much recognition and is overshadowed by other, less awesome comics. In this installment, Mildred has a Crowning Moment of Heartwarming and we get a peek at another sci-fi classic by the late Gary P. Rastov. One of the cool things about this comic is that it has actual seasons. There’s no story-related reason why the characters are wearing warm clothes. They do because it’s autumn! Now go, and read the damn comic.

Unhelpful hint: try to have something to say. Listing four webcomics and appending sentences that say basically nothing about them does does not make for an interesting post. If your text doesn’t take up more room than the webcomics themselves you should probably come up with something to actually say or hold off on posting.
The shortness was intentional. My blurbs are actually as long as the ones The Comics Curmudgeon does (the influence is pretty clear…) I think the problem is that font size here is really small and I can’t change that. So, maybe I should make the pictures smaller? Or move them to the side of text? Anyway, I’ll keep that in mind when I write the next one. I can be long-winded too if people want that.
i commented in the last post about Carl’s use of semi colons. i meant to add that he does use the correctly and fairly often. but in addition to the correct uses are the incorrect ones fusing two complete sentences.
of course this is a minor infraction in the land of grammar, but i just see this a suggestion or comment rather on a way for Carl to improve the flow and diction of his writing. i just simply find the dashes jolting. maybe carl just has a jolting speach pattern?
as a disclaimer, i’m on a pretty good dose of sleeping pills and i could have just written a sonnet about dragons in tuxedos for all i know. good day!
I would prefer more in depth descriptions. For instance, “Minimum Security.” I was sure that you were just being snide and facetious when you described what had happened. I had to actually check out the comic for myself to realize that you were understating its insanity.
Comics Curmudgeon style is great. Short, punchy putdowns is the way to go. It needs some work, though.
Read http://cakewrecks.blogspot.com/ . Yes, it’s about cakes, and is therefore “girly”, but man, she has some hilarious putdowns. Use that style. Embrace it. Perfect it. If you do these things, this will be a great feature.
Comic request: Joy of tech. Rip this Apple propaganda apart.
Also lukesurl
And the oatmeal, hipster hitler, oglaf, subnormality, a softerworld, cowbirds in love, http://www.markdoesntunderstandanimals.com/ , sexy losers, and sinfest, the bare pit/ loxie and zoot (NSFW comics about nudism), the far left side, jesus and mo, seem good comics for this. Either because they try waaayyyy too hard or because of shear wtf factor. The problem with doing the snarky joshreads style is that webcomics are rarely censored or family friendly. Much of what josh criticizes about newspaper comics is how washed down and family friendly they are.
Others: Chick tracts, although not really webcomics, are hilarious. There’s this one webcomic, also, that’s christian, but I can’t find the name of it…it’s all about how stupid liberals and atheists are. Also, maybe once in a while a comic from reddit.com/r/fffffffuuuuuuuuuuu . They’re often funny, but so incredibly stupid.
Does Sinfest have RSS? I really hate this comic, but I can’t see myself reading it regularly unless it has RSS… Thanks for the suggestions, BTW, I’m going to check these out.
Sinfest.net doesn’t have its own RSS feed, but a fan-made one with inline images can be found here:

I like Sinfest, although the cutesy Pooch and Percival strips are generally better than the ones that try hard to be edgy and offensive. The comic’s art’s consistently appealing.
ejsejs, I hadn’t checked out Joy of Tech before so I decided to do so. I hate it. I can usually find something amusing in most things but that ruined my morning. Thank you so much
Carl, I’ve been reading the archives of Cyanide and Happiness (i discovered it recently), and I must say I find it very funny (of course not all the time, but quite regularly.) I’d be very much interested in knowing why you don’t like it. Can it be the subject of your next post? Pleaaaase?
Tim, the SMBC character doesn’t have an abnormally long neck. What you could think is part of his neck is in fact his right clavicle. Anyway, you’re being petty: I find SMBC’s art really good and always at the service of the joke.
I just wanted to say that Minimum Security is pretty much one of the worst webcomics ever created.
In regards to ejsejs…I feel like I know what you’re talking about. Most of the conservative Christian comics I can think of are political cartoons though. However I do know of one called “After Eden” that I won’t link to that is just horrible and is just a “lol scientists be so dumb to believe in evolution” type comic.
Here’s a little bit of a triumph story for this blog:
Inspired by this post, I read the entirety of Unwinder’s Tall Comics today. That is an amazing comic! Interesting, character driven, actually funny. It has a great way of presenting a joke without it being punchline-y.
It was a little bit like Achewood, though I hate to use comparisons and Achewood is much better on general principal. But it had a similar approach to humor. You know, the good kind.
Anyways, thank you Tim for introducing Unwinder to me. It was a good match. A FINE match indeed.
Great. Another goddamn troper.
Agreeing with MSPaint. Is not about wordcount, but about lack of context. There’s no context for people who has no idea what you’re talking about, it’s just “something wierd happened is this webcomic i’m reading”, kinda lke reading the reading the Twitter account of somebody I don’t know. The worse is in that Mininum Security thing, where you star with the statement “In one of the most insane comics ever” (wich is a damn daring statement, considering what webcomics has to offer), but the thing is cut short. Really made me wish you made something longer, explaining in your own words how insane is, since it sounded like you have a clear picture about it.

Go back to grammar school; you can use a semi-colon to link two independent clauses.
Wow Grue … and you thought that redux was lame, stones and glass houses and all that …
i LOVE unwinder, it has some of the smartest jokes in webcomicsland.
Yeah, I think your comments need to be longer and have more content. Do VG Cats (which I love) and Cyanide and Happiness (which I hate.) Or tell Carl to do C&H; I too want to know why he hates it.
Yay for the Unwinder love, but your “click to see the full comic” thing is sort of dead.
Well, fuck me, why did nobody notice that earlier? At least I remembered to link it in the text. Anyway, I wrote another post, but Carl posted today and I don’t want to post on the same day as him. It’s much better, I promise.
