Tim reads webcomics (October 18, 2010)

I’m posting this earlier than usual because this week looks grim in terms of me having time to read lots of comics, so I’ll just talk about some comics from last week and we’ll see what happens. Today: comics made by graphic designers! Infographics for everyone! Plus, one comic made by a hack!

Joy of Tech (13/1o/2010)

Car analogy: the cutting edge of humor. Yeah, I know it’s kind of topical but come on.

The Oatmeal (13/10/2010)

I usually don’t mind The Oatmeal, but this one strikes me as particularly shitty. And not just because I have a fetish for #7. It just oozes smugness and disdain for those stupid people who dare to enjoy the moments in life. Though this Randallesque attitude is present in some other Oatmeals, usually they have at least something amusing in them.  Not in this one – it’s just completely boring and devoid of joy.

Also some obscure hate-blog “Unfunny Things” made a parody of The Oatmeal this week, which is pretty much spot on.

Hipster Hitler (16/10/2010)

(click to see the full comic)

Oh Hipster Hitler, why must you be so sexy? And lazy. Much like a certain Carl Z. Wheeler. I’m probably going to be fuehred for this.

So you guys were too mean to Kirk and he won’t be writing QCSucks anymore. I don’t read QC regularly, but I just can’t ignore this particular strip:

Questionable Content (15/10/2010)

It seems that Jeph Jacques joins our cause to promote breast cancer awareness (see my previous column) and here we have Angus (that’s Angus, right? they all look the same to me) checking Faye’s breasts for lumps. How thoughtful of him! Let’s just hope this story arc doesn’t take a sudden turn to Funky Winkerbean-ville. Also it might be just me, but this gradient Jeph uses for blushing is hilarious.

lols @ “I’m probably going to be fuehred for this.”

Also, the Oatmeal’s art was never this horrible. Seriously, people have lips, not siphons. We’re not mussels!

Heh, yeah, that blush appears to be on about the same level as the Joy of Tech artwork.

Definitely going to have to start reading Hipster Hitler! I love it. I’m definitely the sort of Jew who subscribes to the Mel Brooks philosophy of humor, so this is right up my alley. I laughed at the pun, too, by the way ;-)

I cannot believe that you call any form of cynicism “Randallesque.” You say he’s not creative, yet you credit him for inventing anti-romance/mocking ‘stupid people’? I’ll agree that that Oatmeal poster is ridiculous–but that’s because it eliminates >90% of all the pictures on Facebook–not because it’s “Randallesque”.
Also I dunno why you choose to hate on Jacques now. He’s had some far more risque comics ( http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1334 ) than that.

4 Semicolons { 10.18.10 at 12:03 pm }

The Joy of Tech one seemed like an amalgam of all the shitty overused jokes about google/linux/mac/windows rolled into one airbrushed shitball. Nothing new to see there.

The Oatmeal one was the same vein of humor, but maybe comprised of slightly less obvious observational humor. Nonetheless, all of the photo criticisms in that comic were overused before facebook even existed and myspace was still “cool.”

Sadly, the unfunny things comic falls into the same trap as what it is criticizing; while the overused observation jokes about photos have been around, so have the criticisms of said photos. Sorry unfunny comics, your anti-joke has been done a thousand times before.

Hipster hitler was almost funny, but mostly boring. The muted colors don’t add any energy to the comic and the faces of the characters make them seem bored. Then again, this seems like the goal of the artist. Mission accomplished! Your comic is kind of boring! At least it got a chuckle out of me.

The QC strip you picked is full of boobs and devoid of humor. Well i did chuckle at the last panel; i have done pretty much the same thing. Once you’ve made an unlikely boob contact, you might as well milk it for all its worth. Well not literally i hope (unless you live on a dairy farm).

BTW i am the anonymous poster who was posting about semicolons. i figured i’d use a name so you know how awesome i am when i post. On that notes, i did notice a lack of semicolons in Timofei’s review. In fact, i noticed a general lack of words. Why is each one so short? if you remove the massive image links, the review reveals itself to be very atrophied. Where is the tsunami of hate?

I like this column, and hope it continues. However, it seems to be the only one on this site. There should be at least 2-3 posts a week, preferably from different authors, if this site is to be successful. I think the short form of this column is fine (maybe it’s a BIT too short, but hey), but we could also use some people who regularly write long-form essays/criticisms of individual comics.

TL;DR need more authors and more content.

Less summaries, more hate! I have read these comics on my own already ! NEED HATE!

I despise this “Joy of tech” comic.

Let’s throw together a bunch of tech companies that have nothing to do with each other and compare them to cars! Haha!
Seriously, this comic does not even begin to make sense. First off, why would facebook and yahoo make cars? They don’t really do any software development, so it really doesn’t make sense to compare them to any of the other companies in this comic. The ‘jokes’ are all thrown together and don’t make any sense with each other.

Haha, Windows crashes a lot! Haha, this joke isn’t over two decades old or anything!

And I do not even know what to say about the Linux “having great service” thing. What does that mean in respect to a self-driving car? Furthermore, what does that mean with respect to Linux? Since linux is FOSS, doesn’t that mean it’s entirely lacking in customer service?

Oh and the layout and art is simply atrocious. Would have benefited a lot from the use of panels, because it honestly took me about thirty seconds to realize that the “propeller beanie” ad was not part of the comic.

I’ve never heard of “The Joy of Tech” before, but it seems simply awful.
